Short Story: Still the good guys?

The raven haired woman did not care if the rain or the wind would ruin her business combination. The water crashed loud into the shore, one wave after the other and the splash added to the rain that wet her even further.

How far will I go for him?

She had asked that question countless times since she had returned to their, no it was not her island.

Fuck

She still though of it as theirs. Rovena dropped onto the soaked sand and reached into her pocked. Her fingers toyed with the diamond ring, the tiny piece of memory that always was able to make her cry no matter what.

Today, her tears did not matter, not out here, not with that weather. Hair, makeup, cloth, everything had been full of sand and water within the few minutes securing the boat took her.

How far will I go for him?

Part of her knew she would do everything, go through every hell, break every rule, void every vow for him. But there was another part.

Will he still love me when I do? Would he even want that part of me?

Doubts. So many doubts.

He? Probably. Could she take it?

Rovena’s right hand reached to the small heart pedant around her neck. Her eyes were caught by all the small cogwheels then the tip of her finger found the right switch.

ba-dum ba-dum ba-dum

The heartbeat of her … was she ready to call her girlfriend yet? A subtle shake of her head.

No, not yet. Companion. Kat is my companion.

The German stared at pulsating lights that represented the heartbeat of her companion. A faint smile formed on her lips. It was beating faster.

Yes, she is training with Delta today.

She reminded herself and a deep sigh left her lips. Her phone vibrated and yet another message popped out. A quick response then Rovena nodded.

“I will go as far as I have to.”

This time the words were spoken loud, in a firm voice and if there was anyone with her even the storm would not have kept them from hearing.

But she was along. Like always when decisions weighted on her mind she was alone. Sure, she could have asked Kat to spend time with her but … it felt wrong, they were not at this point. But getting there. The German looked at the heart again and smiled.

She brushed her hair back and rose to her feet. Of course the wind blew it right into her face again when she let go of them. But this time she laughed.

Go as far as I have to.

Rovena chuckled and shook her head. Wasn’t she already committed to that anyways? Ilana’s revenge, Kate’s revenge, getting Charlie back … this was quite a number of ongoing black operations.

Are we still the good guys? Aren’t we breaking all we promised?

She asked herself and nodded. They were. No secrets, that promise had vanished with the reveal of the Roshinava but Burke aside, PGs had taken it far too well. As if they even wanted to be lied to.

Another shake of her head.

We broke our promises, but we still are the good guys.

Rovena looked at the heart again and smiled.

“And you will either love me how I am or not. But fuck I hope you will.”

Time to get work done. Time to call in more favors from people she hated, slit open some throats and prepare the invasive investigation gear. Time to avenge her friends.

On some days, she had to be a brutal avenging angel to be the guarding angel the world saw her as. And for the moment, it felt good. Right. Empowering.

She headed back to the house to get a shower, fresh cloth and work done. Rovena did not even notice how bright the bracelet on her wrist was glowing.
